Hillsborough Real Estate
The town of Hillsborough, the County Town of Orange County (population 5,500 approx), is regarded by many as the “hidden gem” of the Triangle area of North Carolina – but rapidly being discovered and appreciated for its small town charm but vibrant and developing downtown environment. The Downtown Historic District – listed on the National Register of Historic Places - with its more than 100 homes, churches and buildings from the late 18th and 19th centuries is evidence of the historic importance of this town. Among those buildings open to the public is the Visitors Center, which served as Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's headquarters when he surrendered the largest of the Confederate armies to Gen. William T. Sherman, leading to the Civil War's end.
The Occoneechee and other Native Americans had already been on the site of Hillsborough, for almost a thousand years, on the spot where the Great Indian Trading path crossed the Eno River as recorded by explorer John Lawson who visited the area in 1701. The town of Hillsborough was formally founded in 1754.
Today, Hillsborough is not only a permanent destination but a tourist destination and a haven for artists and writers. The town is centrally located in North Carolina with fast access to the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensborough and High Point) and the triangle towns Durham and Raleigh. Interstate 85 runs through the south part of town, and interstate 40 is just outside so Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina is just 15 minutes away, Durham and Duke University is just 15 minutes away and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport is 35 minutes away and the state Capital, Raleigh, is only 40 minutes away.
The best bit about Hillsborough though is that it has great places to eat - Tupelos, Panciuto, Gulf Rim, Saratoga Grill and more just minutes away from Downtown, The Wooden Nickel - a great pub, the Blue Bayou Blues Club – best blues in the Triangle, Cup-a Joe’s, boutique, art and gift shops, Dual Supply Hardware store – once you’re in you will never want to leave, Farmer’s Market, Library, Eno River, and new for 2008 – Weaver Street Market – the co-operative grocery store and cafe, etc, all within the Historic Downtown. And there’s more – l would be delighted to share what I know …
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Occoneechee Speedway (one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and the only track remaining from the inaugural 1949 season), Triangle Sportsplex, schools and all the shops and services you need to survive are within the town limits…
Working together, the Town of Hillsborough and Orange County have drafted and are currently implementing a sustainable Strategic Growth Plan which aims to facilitate sustainable growth without undermining the attractive and unique small-town features and character of Hillsborough – it simply gets better and better every year!
